Tata Nano: Low-cost car with state-of -the-art finishing
October 30th, 2009
Just a short one: the Indian Tata Nano is often referred as the cheapest car in the world. And if it is the cheapest car then the „ingredients“ like parts, design, etc… must be cheap and maybe low-cost as well, one would imagine. However, this certainly does not apply to the painting process!
The new Tata Nano is produced in the Singur plant which is equipped with a state-of-the-art paint finishing system of German specialist Dürr. RoDip for the pre-treatment and KTL coating, robots for the underbody coating and exterior painting, all with optimized temperature and humidity control.
Painting of automotive PP parts without pre-treatment
October 29th, 2009
PP (polypropylene) is one of the most common thermoplastic materials used in the automotive industry. Due to its properties, the material also replaces more and more engineering plastics. But there are drawbacks as the PP has a nonpolar surface which does not allow the adhesion of paints or inks. But an unpainted surface is not acceptable for most applications. In addition normal PP grades have not sufficient UV resistance. Usually pre-treatment is needed in order to apply the paint to the part. But this belongs to the past!
The polarizing paint and primer system of the company Polysil ( www.polysil.de ) allows the application of the material directly to the parts surface without any pre-treatment. Significant cost savings can be achieved as the preliminary treatment step can be left out. Read more…
Sabura: Foldable spray booth for highest flexibility
October 9th, 2009
The company Sabura in Kamen (Germany) is specialized in the design and production of so-called universal room systems. These systems are mobile and foldable and therefore very suitable to be used as a mobile paint booth, especially for larger objects which have to be painted on the spot. The booth is ready in seconds, and the overhead crane can be used to service the booth. The size of cabin, airflow within the cabin and type of air filter can be designed according to the customers requirements. Options like additional A/C or heated air circulation are also possible.
Besides the usage as paint booths, these systems are commercially employed for dust-extraction, assembly, clean room and drying.

Air Operated Agitators for up to 200 Litres
October 6th, 2009
Already supplying a wide range of agitators for paints, resins, chemicals and other fluids, B.S.C. Teknik now also offers air operated agitators for pressure tanks and drums of up to 200 litres. The new range of vertical 200 litre agitators with 3 kW air motor (direct drive)
are suitable for low to high viscosity materials. This type completes the existing range of 10, 20, 40 and 60 litre agitators.
Low speed avoids material degradation
Speed can be adjusted in a range of 500-6,000 RPM for the smaller agitators and 300-3,000 RPM for the larger ones, incl. the new 200 litre agitator. All sizes are suitable for a maximum operating pressure of 7 bar (100 psi). As an option the 200 litre agitator comes with a gear-reducer to bring the speed down to 15-150 RPM. This low speed reduces material degradation to a minimum and improves quality of the stirred material. Different agitator designs are available like manual type (colloquially also called quick mixer), pale mounted, bung, C-clamp for rim mounting or in connection with a pressure tank/pressure pot. Wide, full-width impellers (blades/propellers) in different designs provide thoroughly mixing of the material, minimizing leftover sediment at the bottom of the pressure tank or drum. Air motors from 0.25 kW to 3 kW are employed, which are also available separately.
Air operated agitators for a wide range of applications
Beside air operated, also electric and hydraulic driven agitators are available in the market. Especially in the field of paints, mainly air operated agitators are used due to safety, cost reasons and easy maintenance. Agitators are typically used in the wood industry, metal fabrication, automotive and of course painting.

Solvent distillation systems recover solvents from paints
October 6th, 2009
Formeco srl (Italy), represented in Thailand by B.S.C. Teknik, is the world-wide leader in the field of systems for the treatment of solvents, water and acids. Over the last 30 years Formeco installed world-wide more than 35,000 machines, i.e. solvent recovery systems, water evaporators and fractional distillation plants.
The distillers for solvent recovery are divided into the DIstatic, DYnamic and Industrial models:
The DIstatic serie are cost-effective distillers which allow the recycling and the re-use of degreasing and washing solvents. A distillation process separates the contaminants, like paints, resins, polymers, pigments and oils, from the original solvent. The process is very effective: The contaminated solvent is brought to its boiling point by a peripheral heating jacket filled with diathermic oil, which is heated by an electrical element. The arising vapours are conveyed to a condenser which is cooled either by air or water. The condensed and recovered solvent is then collected in a tank for its reuse. The units are available with a capacity of 7 – 12 – 25 – 60 – 120 – 180 litres. This serie can be connected to a vacuum unit in order to bring down the boiling point of high boiling solvents. Vacuum is also needed for flammable solvents which have a close boiling point and flash point.
The DYstatic serie works after the same distillation process but has a rotating scraper with adjustable metallic blades which keeps the contaminated solvent in constant movement allowing maximum extraction of the residues. An automatic drying cycle allows the residues to be extracted in solid or powder state. The units are available in 30 – 60 – 120 litres capacity. Vacuum units are also available as an option.
The Industrial units aim at high capacity of 150, 250, 400, 600 and 1000 litres per batch and can also be equipped with a rotating scraper (optional) for the same purpose as in the DYstatic serie. The boiler, built with 8mm AISI 304 stainless steel, guarantees high resistance and long working life. The with purpose over dimensioning of the geometric capacity, in respect to the maximum load level, allows a perfect separation of solvents from contaminants, and reduces possible entrainments to a minimum.
